Mihail Kogălniceanu National Museum of Literature
Museum / gallery in Buiucani, Chișinău
The museum at 79 Alexei Mateevici Street is devoted to Romanian-language literature from Bessarabia and the Republic of Moldova. It was founded in 1965 on the initiative of the Writers’ Union and has changed its name several times: today it calls itself the National Museum of Romanian Literature, while official records also use the older name, Mihail Kogălniceanu National Museum of Literature. Its collections hold manuscripts, rare books, documents, photographs, posters and writers’ personal belongings, and it also runs house-museums outside the capital dedicated to Alexandru Donici, Constantin Stamati and Grigore Vieru.
The programme is busy — temporary exhibitions on Bessarabian poets, book launches, author meetings, workshops and poetry evenings, all announced on mnl.md. The main building, the villa of engineer Pronin, is under restoration (work began in October 2026), so check which rooms are open before you go.
Visitors are highly satisfied. They like the quiet, leafy setting next to Valea Morilor park and guides who clearly enjoy telling the story of the house and the exhibits. Current tickets and contacts are on the website and in the listing.
