Moldova and the EU to help each other recover tax debts: Government approves draft law
On 30 September the Government approved a draft law on mutual assistance in recovering tax debts, customs duties and other mandatory payments. It will allow Moldova and EU member states to help each other collect arrears.
Moldova’s tax authority will be able to ask EU countries to recover tax debts from debtors located there, and Moldova will in turn help recover debts arising in member states. The bill covers information exchange, service of documents, transmission of recovery requests and precautionary measures. It also expands the powers of the State Tax Service and aligns national rules with EU law. Parliament still has to examine it.
What it means for you
- If Parliament passes the bill, Moldova and EU states could assist one another in recovering eligible tax and customs debts from assets located in their jurisdictions. The proposal is not yet law.
- If the bill passes, companies active in the EU should review their tax standing in both jurisdictions and watch for implementing rules.
- If adopted and implemented, the mechanism could reduce advantages for those who evade tax; the result will depend on the final rules and how they are enforced.
