Where to Change Winter Tyres in Chișinău: Tyre Services by District and Useful Tips

In Chișinău, tyre-change season often starts suddenly: two or three cold mornings can be enough to fill local workshops. It is easier to inspect your tyres early and choose a service point near home, work or your daily route.

In short: Moldova does not have one fixed calendar date when every driver must fit winter tyres. The legal requirement depends on road conditions. In practice, do not wait for the first snow: check tread depth, age and condition before the seasonal rush.

When are winter tyres mandatory in Moldova?

There is currently no fixed date such as 1 December. Under Moldova’s Road Traffic Regulations, approved by Government Decision No. 357/2009, when the road is covered with snow, ice or black ice, passenger cars and vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes must use tyres marked M+S, M.S. or M&S. The current official text is available on legis.md.

This differs from the older rule linked to 1 December–1 March. Today the actual road conditions matter. Studded tyres should not be used when there is no snow, ice or black ice, except for the situations provided by the regulations. Incompatible tyres, including a summer/winter mix, must not be fitted on the same axle.

Why does temperature matter?

Tyre tread is a compound of natural and synthetic rubber, silica, carbon black, oils and other materials. Summer and winter compounds are designed for different temperature ranges. Summer rubber gradually becomes stiffer in the cold; winter compounds are formulated to remain more flexible, while their sipes and channels help on cold wet roads, slush and snow.

+7°C is not a physical switch. Performance changes gradually and depends on the tyre model, road surface and weather. Treat it as a useful seasonal cue rather than a legal boundary.

Why not keep winter tyres on all summer?

On hot asphalt the softer winter compound wears faster, tread blocks deform more under braking and cornering, and steering response becomes less precise. Keeping winter tyres all year simply to avoid two seasonal changes is not necessarily a saving.

Summer, winter or all-season?

Moldova has very hot summers but also winter periods with sub-zero temperatures, black ice, snow and cold wet roads. If you use the car every day, travel outside the city and need to drive regardless of weather, separate summer and winter sets provide the most predictable seasonal performance.

Good all-season tyres can make sense for low annual mileage, mostly urban driving and drivers who can avoid severe winter weather. If you choose all-season, look for 3PMSF. An all-season tyre is a calculated convenience compromise, not the best tyre in every condition.

1.6 mm is the legal minimum, not an ideal winter target

From 20 September 2026, following Government Decision No. 122/2026, the minimum main-groove tread depth is 1.6 mm for M1 passenger vehicles and N1 vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, 2.0 mm for M2/M3 buses and 1.0 mm for N2/N3 trucks. For winter use, roughly 4 mm is a much more useful practical reference than simply driving down to the legal limit.

M+S and 3PMSF: what is the difference?

M+S is the marking explicitly named in Moldova’s current road rule for snowy, icy or black-ice conditions. 3PMSF, the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, indicates that the tyre has passed a standardised snow-performance test. For a new winter or all-season tyre, 3PMSF is a useful technical benchmark, but it should not be confused with the exact wording of Moldovan law.

How to read 205/60 R16 92H

205 is tyre width in millimetres; 60 is the sidewall-height-to-width ratio; R means radial construction; 16 is wheel diameter in inches; 92 is the load index; H is the speed rating. Do not change size just because a deal looks attractive: use sizes approved for your vehicle.

Where to change winter tyres in Chișinău — by district

Yell.md’s Tyre service category contains close to 30 points in Chișinău and nearby suburbs. The selection below is not a ranking; it focuses on practical location, declared services and the amount of customer feedback available.

Centru: fewer tyre-service options

Full tyre workshops are harder to find in central Chișinău than in Botanica, Râșcani or Telecentru. One option is Vulcanizare / Service Sudare Argon. Recent information about Force on Ismail Street is inconsistent, so call before travelling.

A practical alternative is to drive a few minutes toward Telecentru. Around Miorița Street you will find Pneu.md, Vulcanizare, Miorița 3 and YZY Wheels.

Botanica

Vulcanizare Botanica is one of the district’s visible options. Master Lux — Muncești combines tyre work with tyre sales, 3D alignment, wheel straightening and seasonal storage. For trucks, Toptyres is worth checking separately.

Buiucani

Autoplanet focuses on tyres and wheels. Tor-Auto sells tyres and batteries and offers fitting, balancing, wheel straightening and alignment. If you want a broader vehicle check at the same visit, consider EuroGarage.

Râșcani

The district has a fairly broad choice. Good Year / Tris Auto lets you buy and fit tyres at the same location. Other options include Ciornoe Koleso, Autoprim and the broader-service Auto Ghera.

Durlești

What should a proper tyre change include?

If tyres are removed from the rims, the workshop should inspect the tyre and wheel, fit the tyre correctly, set pressure and balance the wheel. After fitting, check cold pressure against the vehicle manufacturer’s specification. Steering-wheel vibration at certain speeds is a reason to have the balance checked again.

Do you need wheel alignment at every seasonal change?

No. Changing tyres does not itself alter alignment. Have it checked if the car pulls to one side, the steering wheel is off-centre, old tyres wore unevenly or you hit a pothole or kerb hard.

Can you fit only two winter tyres?

For predictable handling, four tyres of the same type and model are preferable. If tread depths differ, the pair with better tread should go on the rear axle to help preserve lateral stability.

How to choose a tyre workshop during the rush

Do not look only at the average rating. A 5.0 based on a handful of reviews does not carry the same information as a 4.7 based on hundreds. Read recent reviews and confirm that the workshop does exactly what you need: fitting, balancing, puncture repair, wheel work, TPMS, alignment or storage.

What else should you inspect?

While the wheels are off, check for uneven wear, cuts or bulges in the sidewalls, damaged rims and valves. Cars with TPMS may need sensor recognition or reset after changing wheel sets, depending on the model.

DOT is not an automatic expiry date. It shows the week and year of manufacture. Age should be considered together with condition, storage history and the tyre manufacturer’s guidance.

Do not wait for the first snowfall

The worst time to look for a tyre workshop is the morning when all of Chișinău has had the same idea. Inspect the tyres early, choose a convenient workshop and book before the first serious cold spell.
