Practical tips
- Moldovan citizens holding a biometric passport can travel visa-free to the Schengen area for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period). Work, study or long stays generally require a national visa or residence permit.
- Embassies in Bucharest are relevant mainly for their own citizens (passports, civil status documents), for national, work and residence visas, and for document legalisation.
- Before travelling, check the official website for appointment rules and whether you can apply online or through a visa centre — sometimes you do not need to go in person.
- Prepare translations and apostilles early: many missions only accept documents in the form required by their own country’s rules.
- In an emergency abroad (lost passport, accident), Moldovan citizens should contact the embassy or consulate of the Republic of Moldova in that country.
