Household savings reach 97 billion lei, debts 66.9 billion
97 billion lei — that is how much Moldovans held in banks and other financial instruments at the end of June 2026, or 26.5% of GDP, a record level. At the same time, household debt rose to almost 66.9 billion lei (18.3% of GDP). The figures come from economist Veaceslav Ioniță, an expert at IDIS Viitorul.
Since the end of 2025, savings have grown by about 7.2 billion lei. Bank deposits total around 93.6 billion, while individuals’ direct holdings of government securities reached about 978 million lei — 50.4% more than at the start of the year. Debt climbed from 60.7 to 66.9 billion lei: about 51.2 billion in bank loans and 15.6 billion in non-bank loans. Net savings (savings minus loans) stand at roughly 30.1 billion lei.
The statistics do not show everything: according to an IDIS Viitorul survey, people still keep about half of their savings at home, mostly in euros.
What it means for you
- Banks hold a large pool of deposits — the resource that also funds business lending.
- Consumer lending is growing fast: the market for instalment sales is bigger, but customers are also more indebted.
- More people buy government securities directly — an alternative to deposits for spare cash.
