Shipping grain to Giurgiulesti now costs up to 7,500 lei more per truck
Up to 7,500 lei — that is how much more a farmer now pays for a single 25-tonne truck of wheat to the port of Giurgiulesti compared with the start of the season.
The estimate comes from economist Iurie Rija. At the start of the season, moving one tonne of wheat from Drochia to Giurgiulesti cost 500–600 lei; it is now around 800 lei and still rising. Diesel is the main driver: the average import price has climbed to 29.62 lei/kg, 42% higher than a year ago, and on 25 September the maximum pump price was 36.82 lei per litre. By 9 September importers had already paid 14.17 billion lei for diesel — more than 93% of the total for the whole of 2025.
Diesel hits twice. In the field, at 70–90 litres per hectare, the price rise adds 840–1,170 lei per hectare. Then comes haulage, where rates are also pushed up by a shortage of trucks, queues at unloading and empty return trips.
What it means for you
- Farmers in the north, far from the port, are the most exposed: build higher logistics costs into your selling price.
- Hauliers: demand for runs to Giurgiulesti is strong, but margins depend on diesel prices.
- All diesel buyers: the economist warns the recent slowdown in quotes is not yet a lasting price drop.
