Local generation covered 53% of electricity delivered to consumers in the first half
In the first half of 2026, domestic production covered 53% of the electricity delivered to end consumers in Moldova, with the rest imported. The figures come from a study by the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) on the 2025–2026 power market.
It is the first time (excluding the Cuciurgan plant) that local capacity has covered more than half of consumption over an extended period. Last year the share was about 40%, and five years ago roughly 20%.
On the wholesale market, Romania remained the main external source, with about 51% of suppliers’ purchases. Local sources — renewables and urban CHP plants — provided about 45%, and Ukraine 4%. Green energy made up 26% of purchases. ANRE warns that renewable output is variable and that storage capacity is still insufficient.
What it means for you
- Import dependence is falling, but prices are still tied to the Romanian market.
- Energy storage is becoming a business niche that the state treats as a priority.
- If you have solar panels, a battery helps you use the energy in the evening peak too.
