Government backs 46,680 lei personal exemption and 12% tax on interest from 2027
The Government has issued its opinion on amendments to the 2027 fiscal and customs policy bill (initiative No. 326). Some MPs’ proposals were accepted, others rejected. Parliament will take the final decision.
The main personal exemption rises from 34,620 to 46,680 lei a year, and the exemption for dependants from 9,900 to 11,040 lei. The monthly VAT-free electricity cap goes up from 100 to 150 kWh per consumption point. The 8% VAT rate for cereal products is kept until 1 January 2028, with reverse charge between VAT payers; the 8% rate for eggs and poultry meat was dropped from the bill.
However, the Government rejected keeping the 6% rate on individuals’ interest income: it will be taxed at 12%. This covers bank deposits, savings and loan associations, crowdfunding and bonds. On a 100,000 lei deposit at 5%, the tax would rise from 300 to 600 lei a year.
What it means for you
- Employees will pay less income tax on salaries; payroll accountants need to update calculations from January 2027.
- Depositors will earn less net income from interest.
- Farmers and grain traders keep 8% VAT but must apply reverse charge.
