Moldova’s trade deficit reached €4.42 billion in eight months
€4.42 billion — Moldova’s trade deficit in January–August 2026, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The gap widened by more than €250 million compared with the same period of 2025.
Exports totalled €2.24 billion (+9.3%) and imports €6.66 billion (+7.1%). For every €100 of imports, the country exports only €33.6. August was weak: exports fell to €268.5 million (−16.2% on July and −6.1% on August 2025), and the monthly deficit reached €549 million.
Almost a quarter of imports (23.8%, about €1.59 billion) is oil and petroleum products, gas and electricity. Agriculture supported exports: cereals grew by 48.8% and oilseeds by 21.4%. The EU takes 66.6% of Moldovan exports, Romania alone 29.9%.
What it means for you
- Importers depend on the euro rate and energy prices — plan currency purchases ahead.
- Agricultural exporters are having a good year, but sales remain concentrated in the EU and Romania.
- A large deficit keeps pressure on the leu and on prices of imported goods.
