EBRD lends Moldova EUR 102.9 million to modernise irrigation
EUR 102.9 million — the EBRD loan to Moldova for restoring and modernising centralised irrigation systems. The agreement was signed on 13 October by the Ministry of Agriculture and the EBRD office in Moldova.
The money comes in two tranches. The first, up to EUR 49.8 million, will rehabilitate the Puhăcenii de Sus and Masivul Căușeni systems in Căușeni, Anenii Noi and Ștefan Vodă districts: water intake, pumping and distribution. About 6,900 ha will gain access to irrigation, and around 300 local farmers are direct beneficiaries, contributing 3% of the investment. The remaining EUR 53.1 million will go to other priority systems, to be selected by the government.
The project also includes an EU grant of up to EUR 4.8 million and EUR 7.2 million under the EU Growth Plan. The ministry expects to save about 13 million m³ of water a year and to triple farm output in the covered areas.
What it means for you
- Farmers in the project areas get irrigation water with an own contribution of only 3%.
- The second tranche is still open — water user associations elsewhere should watch the priority list.
- Suppliers of pumps, equipment and construction works can expect new tenders.
